Art defines the first impression of a game and often the majority of its production effort. A clear pipeline keeps quality consistent and performance under control.
1. Concept art and style guide
Everything starts with mood boards and concept sketches for characters, environments and UI. The result is a style guide: colour palette, proportions, line style, lighting and material rules. It keeps every artist aligned.
2. 2D art pipeline
- Sprites and illustrations in tools like Photoshop, Krita or Aseprite (pixel art)
- Animation: frame-by-frame or skeletal animation with Spine or the engine's 2D tools
- Sprite atlases to reduce draw calls and memory
- Parallax backgrounds and particle effects for depth
3. 3D art pipeline
- Modelling (Blender, Maya): from blockout to final shape
- Retopology: clean, low-poly meshes for real-time use
- UV unwrapping and texturing (Substance Painter): PBR materials
- Rigging: skeletons for characters
- Animation: hand-keyed or motion capture
- LODs: lower-detail versions for distant objects
4. UI and UX art
Buttons, icons, HUD, menus and fonts – readable on small screens, consistent with the style guide, and designed for different aspect ratios.
5. VFX and lighting
Particles, shaders and lighting bring scenes to life. On mobile, baked lighting and simple shaders keep frame rates stable.
Performance budgets
Especially for mobile games we define budgets early:
- polygon counts per character and scene,
- texture sizes and compression formats,
- number of materials and draw calls,
- total download size.
Art that looks great but drops the frame rate is not finished art.
Working with external artists
Many projects combine in-house and external art. Clear briefs, the style guide, naming conventions and technical specifications make collaboration smooth. We integrate client-supplied art and provide feedback for engine compatibility.
Tools we use
Blender, Photoshop, Krita, Aseprite, Spine, Substance Painter and the art tools of Unity, Unreal and Godot.
A well-organised art pipeline makes the game look consistent, run smoothly and stay easy to extend with new content after launch.
