A new design can make your website look great – and still destroy years of SEO work if the relaunch is done carelessly. Follow this checklist.
Before the relaunch
- Crawl the old website and export every URL (tools like Screaming Frog).
- Collect performance data: which pages bring traffic, rankings and backlinks (Google Search Console, analytics).
- Decide what happens to each page: keep, merge, rewrite or remove.
- Create a redirect map: every old URL gets a target URL on the new site.
- Keep valuable content: don't shorten pages that rank well without reason.
During development
- Keep URL structures where possible.
- Carry over titles, meta descriptions and headings of strong pages.
- Implement 301 redirects for every changed URL – not just to the homepage.
- Set up structured data, XML sitemap and robots.txt.
- Check page speed and Core Web Vitals on the staging site.
- Block the staging site from search engines (and remember to unblock at launch!).
Launch day
- Activate redirects and test a sample of old URLs.
- Remove "noindex" and staging restrictions.
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
- Check analytics and consent tracking are working.
- Test forms, checkout and key conversions.
After launch
- Monitor 404 errors and crawl errors daily for the first weeks.
- Compare rankings and organic traffic with the baseline.
- Fix missing redirects quickly.
- Update important backlinks if possible.
- Check that Google indexes the new pages.
Common mistakes
- Redirecting everything to the homepage
- Forgetting image and PDF URLs
- Changing many things at once (domain, URLs and content) without a plan
- Launching with "noindex" still active
A short dip in rankings can happen after big changes, but with a clean migration it recovers quickly. We include this checklist in every redesign project.
