Interactive maps make location information easy to explore: store locators, project maps, real-estate listings, delivery zones or asset dashboards.
Libraries and platforms
- Leaflet: lightweight, simple, huge plugin ecosystem. Perfect for most business maps.
- OpenLayers: powerful for professional GIS needs, projections and OGC services.
- MapLibre GL: open-source vector maps with smooth zooming and 3D styling.
- Mapbox: commercial platform with beautiful vector basemaps, geocoding and routing.
- Google Maps Platform: familiar look, strong places and geocoding data.
Basemaps
The background map can come from OpenStreetMap-based providers, commercial services or official geodata. For Germany, state geoportals provide high-quality official maps and aerial imagery.
Typical features
- Markers with pop-ups and filters
- Clustering for many points
- Search and geocoding of addresses
- Drawing tools and measurements
- Layers that users can switch on and off
- Heatmaps and choropleth maps
- Mobile-friendly touch interaction
GDPR considerations
Loading maps from external servers transfers the visitor's IP address. In Germany this usually means you should load third-party maps only after consent or host map tiles yourself or with an EU provider. A "click to load map" placeholder is a common solution.
Performance tips
- Use vector tiles or clustering for thousands of points
- Load data on demand for the visible area
- Simplify complex polygons
- Cache tiles and data
Integration
Maps can pull data from your CMS, CRM, ERP or a PostGIS database and update automatically. For field data, mobile apps can feed new points directly into the map.
