Push notifications are one of the most powerful tools in an app – and one of the easiest to misuse. Done right, they bring users back at the right moment. Done wrong, they lead to muted notifications and uninstalled apps.
Ask for permission at the right moment
On iOS and on Android 13+, apps must ask for notification permission. Do not ask immediately on first launch. Instead:
- Let users experience the app first.
- Ask in context – for example after booking: "Do you want a reminder before your appointment?"
- Show a short explanation screen before the system prompt.
Contextual requests get far higher opt-in rates than generic ones at launch.
Types of notifications
- Transactional: order confirmed, driver arriving, payment received. Highest value, users expect them.
- Reminders: appointments, unfinished checkout, streaks in learning apps.
- Updates: new content, price drops on saved items.
- Promotional: offers and campaigns – use sparingly.
Rules for relevance
- Personalise: use what the user did, not just their name.
- Time it well: respect time zones and quiet hours; no marketing at 6 am.
- Limit frequency: set a maximum per week for promotional messages.
- Deep-link: the tap should open exactly the right screen, not the home page.
- Let users choose: offer notification categories in settings.
Technology
Android uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), iOS uses Apple Push Notification service (APNs) – usually both via FCM or a service like OneSignal. The backend decides who gets what and when, based on events and user preferences. Rich notifications can include images and action buttons.
Measure the impact
Track delivery, open rate, conversion (did the user complete the intended action?) and opt-outs or uninstalls after a campaign. A/B-test texts and timing. If a message type increases opt-outs, stop it.
Privacy
Marketing pushes need a legal basis – usually consent. Do not put sensitive information (health, finances) in the visible text of a notification; it appears on the lock screen.
Quick checklist
- Contextual permission request
- Clear categories and controls
- Personalised, deep-linked content
- Frequency limits and quiet hours
- Analytics on opens and opt-outs
Handled this way, notifications become a service users appreciate rather than noise they switch off.
