Slow Wi-Fi and dropped connections cost time every day. A well-planned network is the invisible foundation of a productive office.
1. Internet connection
Choose bandwidth based on users and cloud services. For business-critical work, consider a backup connection (for example a second line or LTE/5G failover).
2. Router and firewall
A business-grade firewall protects the network, enables VPN for remote work and can segment traffic. Consumer routers often lack these features and updates.
3. Switches and cabling
- Structured cabling (Cat6 or better) to workplaces, access points and printers
- Managed switches for VLANs and monitoring
- PoE (Power over Ethernet) to power access points and phones
4. Wi-Fi planning
- Plan coverage based on room layout, walls and number of users – not just one router in the corner
- Several ceiling-mounted access points with central management
- Current standards (Wi-Fi 6/6E or newer) for capacity
- Separate 2.4 GHz and 5/6 GHz usage sensibly
5. Network segmentation
Use VLANs to separate:
- staff devices,
- guest Wi-Fi,
- printers and IoT devices,
- servers and management.
This limits damage if one device is compromised.
6. Security
- Strong Wi-Fi encryption (WPA3 where possible)
- Regular firmware updates
- No default passwords
- Logging and monitoring
7. Documentation
Network diagram, IP plan, passwords in a secure vault, and labelled cables. Future changes become much easier.
8. Testing
Measure Wi-Fi signal and speed throughout the office after installation and adjust access point placement.
